Chapter 5: Nanny on Salary

Ansel's car turned into the drive as I walked out with June's capsule wrapped in a napkin inside my purse.

Two small faces were pressed to the upstairs window.

I waved at them, and they waved back with both hands.

Ansel got out in jeans and a wrinkled shirt, and for the first time in six years he looked as though he had not slept.

"You stayed for breakfast," he said. "Good."

"I stayed for them."

"I know." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Iris, about last night. I did it badly."

"You did it in front of three hundred people with a lawyer's folder."

"Yes." He did not argue. "Have you been feeling all right?"

I watched him.

"What do you mean?"

"Headaches. Dreams. Anything strange." His voice was light, and his hands were not. "You were pale last night. People get sick under stress."

"Do they?"

"Did you take this morning's capsule?"

I had not, and I did not want him to know it.

"Yes," I said.

His shoulders came down an inch, and he smiled.

"Good girl," he said.

I would have forgiven that sentence a week ago.

"The guest house is ready," he said. "Come Sunday, and you can have the kids every afternoon. You'd be the nanny, on salary. It's more than you'd get anywhere else."

"I'm the nanny," I said.

"It's a fair offer."

"I'll think about it," I said, because I wanted him comfortable.
