Chapter 6: The Luna's Girl

I went to Blackwater's old lodge at ten that night, and I went alone.

Ronan had wanted to come inside.

"It says alone," I said, in the truck. "He's dying. If I bring an Alpha through that door, he won't say a word."

"Then I wait at the tree line," Ronan said. "If you hear me howl, you run."

"You don't howl. You're an Alpha. You send the Beta."

"Then he'll howl," Ronan said, and for a moment we both almost smiled.

The lodge stood behind the main estate, a black cabin at the end of a gravel road.

A nurse in gray scrubs opened the door, looked at my face and stepped aside without speaking.

Inside it smelled of medicine and woodsmoke.

The old Alpha lay propped on three pillows in a high bed, with a tube under his nose.

Ansel had his father's jaw and his father's shoulders, but the man in the bed had gone to bone.

His eyes were still sharp.

"Sit," he said, and his voice was gravel. "Sit where I can see you."

I sat in the chair by the bed.

He looked at me for a long time.

"The Luna's girl," he said.

My hands went still in my lap.

"My mother was a Hart."

"She was a Dunbar," he said. "And so are you, whatever she told you."

"I don't know that name."

"You've never heard it." He closed his eyes briefly. "She hid it well. I'll give her that. I searched twenty-two years and she was in a college town, six hours south, raising you human."
