Chapter 17: The Courtroom
The trial took four days, and on the third they put me on the stand.
Courtroom 2208 smelled of floor wax and old coffee.
Bryce sat at the defense table in a gray suit that no longer fit across the shoulders.
His mother's seat in the gallery stayed empty.
Walter sat in the second row.
Nathan sat in the last one, by the door, because I had asked him to.
The judge was a small, dry woman with reading glasses on a chain.
She had looked at Bryce exactly twice in three days, and neither look had been warm.
"Ms. Hale, you may be seated," she said. "Mr. Landry's counsel will begin."
His lawyer stood and buttoned his jacket.
He was the same man who had handed me the petition, and he had the grim patience of a man billing by the hour.
"Ms. Hale. On June thirtieth you signed a settlement."
"I did."
"It states you contributed nothing to Pinnacle Freight."
"It does."
"You signed it freely, in front of nine witnesses."
