Chapter 10: Year Two

Cora told it flatly, looking at the mug and not at him.

"I was pregnant in the second winter," she said. "Four months along. I told no one but the doctor."

Alexander sat very still on the stool beside hers.

"Brooks was in Aspen. He said it was an investor retreat. I know now it was Delaney."

She turned the mug a quarter turn.

"I wanted to tell him in person. I'd planned it. I was going to cook his favorite dinner, and then I was going to tell him everything. The baby. The Larkspur seal. My name."

"Cora."

"Let me finish, or I won't."

He nodded.

"It was a Thursday. I was scrubbing the kitchen floor, because Marguerite had said it wasn't clean enough for her guests."

Her voice stayed even.

"The pain started on my knees. I got as far as the table, and then I was on the tiles."

Alexander's hand closed on his own knee.

"Marguerite found me," Cora said. "She stood in the doorway with her handbag and looked at me, and she didn't come in right away."

"Why?"

"She was working out how it would look."

She almost smiled.

"She drove me to the hospital herself. In the car she said, 'This is a private family matter. You'll say nothing to anyone.' And at the hospital she signed the form."

"What form?"

"I don't know. It was a form."

She breathed out.

"I lost the baby that night. She called Brooks from the corridor. I heard her. She said, 'Cora has had a little trouble. Nothing serious. Don't come home early.'"

The kitchen clock ticked.

"He didn't come home early," Cora said. "He sent flowers through his assistant. They were carnations, because carnations were the cheapest, and the card was typed."
