Chapter 15: In Her Own Words
Alexander was waiting at the curb of the parish hall with the car door open.
"I've read it," he said. "I can have a lawyer on the paper in ten minutes."
"No," Cora said.
"Cora."
"If I sue, it stays theirs. Delaney's version, with the pictures and the screaming." She got into the car. "I'm going to tell it myself, once, and then nobody gets to sell it."
He looked at her for a long moment.
"Where?"
"The steps of the tower. Call the man with the microphone."
By three o'clock the steps of Lenhart Tower were crowded with cameras.
Cora stood at the top in the gray suit, with Alexander one step below and to her left.
She had no notes.
She did not need any.
"My name is Cora Lenhart," she said. "Some of you know me as Mrs. Farwell. I was married for five years to a man who told the world I was his housekeeper."
The cameras clicked.
"This afternoon a woman I thought was my friend sold the rest of it to a newspaper."
She took a breath.
"So here is the rest of it, in my words."
Behind the cameras, she could see people on the pavement stopping to listen.
"When I was twenty-five, I lost a baby at four months," she said. "My husband was in Aspen with the woman he later announced he'd marry. Nobody came to me for hours."
Her voice did not shake.
She had practiced the steadiness in the car, line by line, and now it held.
"His mother found me and took me to the hospital. She told him not to come home. He didn't come home. He sent carnations, and the card was typed."
A woman in the crowd began to cry.
"It was not a breakdown," Cora said. "I did not lose my mind. I lost my child, and I got up the next day and made his breakfast."
She looked straight into the nearest lens.
