Chapter 9: Behind the Glass Door

Alexander Easterling had obeyed one order for five years, and tonight he sat in a hotel bar and wished he had broken it on the first day.

Brooks had called him at noon.

Just you, the message said. Neutral ground. I want to talk about her.

Alexander had told Cora where he was going.

She had said, "Wear the recorder," and handed him a pen with a tiny red light, and he had put it in his breast pocket.

Now Brooks sat across a small table in the dim bar with a whiskey he was not drinking, and Alexander did not touch his own.

"I'll be quick," Brooks said. "You're an intelligent man. You work for my wife."

"I work for Miss Lenhart."

"Same thing." Brooks leaned back. "I've been thinking about what you do for her. Money in, money out, a name on a letterhead. A clerk. What does she pay you, five hundred thousand?"

"That's not your business."

"I'll double it," Brooks said. "A seat on the Farwell board, a title, a signing bonus. All you do is tell her the divorce is a bad idea."

Alexander watched him.

He had spent five years trained to see nothing about this man.

Every first Friday Cora had come downtown on the early train, and he had stood behind a glass door in the Larkspur office and watched her sign what he gave her.

She never asked about Brooks, and Alexander never offered.

She had said, in the first month, in a quiet voice, Never look into my husband.

He had thought it was love.

He had thought a woman who gave an order like that was protecting something she believed in.

He had kept her order faithfully, and meanwhile Brooks had kept a girlfriend.

"No," Alexander said.
