Chapter 12: Served

Greta's POV

Otis showed me the monitor at seven the next morning.

He didn't say a word.

He rewound the alley camera to four a.m., and I watched Daphne crouch in my back doorway and press a black coin under the old wood.

"She's listening to us," I said.

"To the kitchen and the back stairs. Everything said within about twelve feet."

"Then she heard every word we said last night."

"Every word you said to me, with the door open," Otis said. "Not one word from the front of the shop. I checked the wall."

"What did I say last night?"

"Nothing. You walked upstairs and shut the door."

I almost laughed.

For once, being silent had been the smart thing.

"So we use it," I said.

"Use it how?"

"Get Libby."

Libby arrived at eight with a travel mug and a plan before I had finished explaining.

She stood in the middle of the kitchen with her hands on her hips and her voice raised.

"So you're really going to sign it in February?"

"Of course I am," I said, loudly, to the ceiling. "Holden handles all that. I've never understood a word of it."

"What about the baker?"

"Oh, him. He's just a man with croissants. I'm only here until the baby comes."

"And then you'll go back to the penthouse?"

"If Holden will have me," I said. "I miss the island."

Otis put a hand over his face and went out through the swinging door.

I could hear him laughing in the dining room, trying not to.

"The island?" Libby whispered.

"It's where I sign things."

"You're a monster," she whispered. "I love it."

By noon, the Sunday brunch crowd had filled every table, and I was sitting on a high stool at the pastry counter with a bowl of lemon curd, working out the winter menu.
