Chapter 17: Say It Now

Gail would not give it to him that night.

"Come for breakfast," she had said on the speaker, in the bright, scared voice she used when she was hiding something. "Tonight, go home and be with your wife."

Brennan drove with both hands on the wheel and said nothing the whole way.

At the house he stood in the front hall with his coat still on.

"She's been lying to me for three years," he said. "Everyone has. My mother, Bree, my father in his grave."

"Not everyone."

"Not you." He looked at me. "You're the only one who walked out when you found out. I used to hate that."

"Do you still?"

"I spent fourteen months thinking you'd erased me."

He said it to the floor.

"You were gone in a day.

"Your side of the closet was empty before I had finished the call. You sent the ring back by courier.

"You never opened one thing I sent. I stood in that closet and I thought, she's taken every trace of me out of her life."

"You were cheating on me for two years."

"I know. I'm not saying it's fair." His voice cracked. "I'm saying that was what it felt like. I never got to say I was sorry to your face. You never gave me a chance to explain."

"There was nothing to explain."

"No," he said. "There wasn't. I wanted to be allowed to say it anyway."

I looked at him in the hall light, a big tired man in a wool coat with a scar through his eyebrow.

"Say it now," I said.

"I'm sorry."

"Again."

"I'm sorry, Lena. I'm so sorry I can't breathe."

I crossed the hall and took his face in my hands.

"Come upstairs," I said.

"Terms," he said, hoarse, and nearly smiled.

"There aren't any tonight."

He took off the coat and let it fall.

We didn't turn on the bedroom lamp. We went into the bathroom, and I turned the shower on and let the water run until the room filled with steam.
