Chapter 24: Closed for a Wedding
On the first Saturday of November, Dot's diner closed at two and opened again at six for a private party.
Dot put paper on the tables and a hand-lettered sign on the door.
It said: Closed for a wedding. Pie is still available.
Sixty people came.
Gail came in her good navy coat, with a casserole dish she had been told not to bring. Edwin came with his wife on his arm, and they took the booth by the window and refused to move.
My mother came in her wheelchair, on a day pass, in a lavender dress Dot had picked out. She sat at the head of the long table with her butterscotch in her lap and said "Lena" to everyone who passed.
The regulars came too, all of them, and half of them had seen the video.
I knew, because they told me.
The man in the feed cap shook my hand and said he'd been rooting for me since the shrimp.
The decree had come in June.
I had kept my house on Wyoming Street. Brennan slept there four nights out of seven, and no one billed anyone.
We had a fight about a thermostat in August and another in September. Neither of us left the room.
Hartwell's papers had been signed in July.
Bree had taken a plea in September and moved to another state.
I wore a cream dress from a shop on Main Street.
I had paid for it with my own money, and I had enough of it now to say so.
