Chapter 5: A Day Early
"Have you eaten, Mr. Hartwell?" I asked, holding the front door open.
"I have not."
"Then you're in luck. Dinner's about to be ready."
It was not even close to ready. My dinner was on Bree's coffee table.
I took his coat and his cane, and I led him to the kitchen, and I put Brennan at the table and handed him a knife and a cutting board.
"Peppers," I said. "Small."
Brennan looked at the knife and then at me, and he started on the peppers.
I had eggs, a block of cheddar, half an onion and a bag of spinach. I had fifteen minutes.
I also had Hartwell, who stood in the middle of my kitchen with his hands behind his back and looked at everything.
He looked at the refrigerator door, which held a list in my handwriting. He looked at the spice rack, labeled.
He opened the drawer under the phone and found the binder.
"What is this?"
"The house," I said, cracking eggs. "The plumber, the roofer, the vaccine dates for the dog we don't have anymore. I started it when we bought the place."
"Seven years of it."
"Seven years and one week. I added a page Saturday."
He turned the pages. His mouth did something small at the corners.
I put the first omelet in front of him, with the spinach folded in, and I stood back.
He ate half of it standing up.
"Mrs. Corrigan, if you ever want to leave this young man, call me."
"For the cooking?"
"For the binder."
Brennan said nothing, and chopped, and kept his eyes on the board.
Hartwell carried his plate into the living room and I followed with a fork he hadn't asked for.
He stopped at the mantel.
Photos stood in a row. There was Gail with a pie. There was Brennan in front of his first truck, grinning.
