Chapter 12: City Hall
"Marry me," Eliot said.
It was six in the morning, in the kitchen on West 22nd Street.
August was standing at the stove in a T-shirt with a spatula in his hand.
He didn't turn around.
"I'm sorry?"
"I'm asking."
"The eggs are burning."
"They've been burning since I came in. Look at me."
August set the spatula down very gently.
He turned.
Eliot stood on the cold tile in his socks with a small gray box in one fist, and his face was white and set.
"Last night you said you weren't asking me to stay," he said. "So I'm asking you. I spent my whole first paycheck on this, at a place on Canal Street, and it isn't a diamond, it's titanium. I know what it's made from. I made it hold up under a flame once."
He opened the box.
Inside lay a plain dark band.
"I'm not marrying you for the shares or the lab, and I'm not marrying you because of the heartbeat. I'm marrying you because you're the only person who ever read the whole page."
August's mouth worked.
"Eliot, you were married four years ago. You've just..."
"I was married to a man who put my work in a drawer. I'd like to be married to one who puts my name on the door."
"It's too fast."
"Probably."
"I could be wrong for you."
"You could," Eliot said. "I'd rather find out as your husband."
For a long moment the only sound was the eggs hissing.
Then August crossed the kitchen in three strides, picked him up off the floor, and kissed him until the eggs began to smoke.
"Yes," he said into his mouth. "Yes, yes, God, yes."
