Chapter 11: Say All of It
"Two years," I said.
"Harlan told me the week before he died."
"You sat across from me at his memorial and said nothing."
"You weren't carrying a child then. There was no clause to explain."
"You married me knowing it."
"Yes."
The old lawyer found something to do with his papers.
Hattie stepped half a pace into the room and stopped.
"I proposed in a hospital because someone had tried to kill you," Brogan said. "That is the truth, and I'd have asked you if you had been a stranger. But I won't tell you the clause had nothing to do with it. It had everything to do with who wanted you dead, and I understood that at the curb, with your coat in my hand."
"You let me think you wanted something else."
"I told you what you needed to survive the day."
"That's what Dalton does," I said.
It landed.
I saw it land.
His jaw tightened, and he took it without a word.
"I'm leaving," I said. "Don't follow me."
"Imogen."
"You had two years. You had a van. You had a kitchen table and a week of coffee, and you said, ask me on Saturday." My voice shook. "I asked you what clause, and you lied to my face."
"I told you I lied."
"After."
He said nothing.
I walked out past the old man and past Hattie, and I went down the service corridor and through the kitchens.
I came out onto Lake Shore Drive in a green silk dress with my back bare and my arms wrapped around myself.
Hattie caught me at the curb with her coat.
