Chapter 10: Mediation

The mediation room had a long table, a plant that was dying and a box of tissues nobody wanted to be the first to touch.

I had a lawyer now.

She was a legal aid attorney in her fifties with a grey braid and a briefcase held shut with a belt.

Bea's friend at the courthouse had found her.

She had read my file in the elevator and told me to keep my mouth shut for the first ten minutes.

Across the table sat Winslow, his polished lawyer and an empty chair for the mediator, who was late.

Eleanor and Lorna had not been invited.

That was the first thing that made me breathe.

"Mrs. Wentworth," said Winslow's lawyer, opening his folder. "My client has authorized me to make a very generous offer."

"Go on," said my lawyer.

"The lot on Alder Street, the insurance payout and a lump sum against his half of the firm. Fifty percent of Wentworth Building's value, paid out over five years. Primary residence of the child to Mrs. Wentworth, with reasonable access for the father."

I looked at my lawyer.

She did not move her face.

"That is everything," I said.

"It is a great deal more than the law requires," the lawyer said.

"What does he want for it?"

"One condition."

"Which is?"

"That Mrs. Wentworth withdraws the petition for dissolution."

I turned my head.

Winslow was looking at the table.

His hands lay in front of him in their gloves, because he'd worn them into the room, and he did not lift his eyes.
