Chapter 21: Victim Statement

Lorna stood at the defence table in an orange jumpsuit with her blonde hair scraped flat.

She did not look at the gallery.

She looked at the judge, and her public defender held her elbow.

I sat in the second row with Winslow on my right and Eleanor on my left.

Eleanor had chosen that seat herself.

She had walked past the cousins on the far side of the aisle and sat down on ours.

She had not looked at Lorna once.

"Ms. Wentworth," said the judge, a heavy man with a flat voice. "You have been advised of your rights."

"Yes, Your Honor."

"How do you plead to arson in the first degree?"

"Guilty."

"And to attempted murder?"

Her voice cracked.

"Guilty."

A sound went through the room.

I felt Winslow's shoulder shift against mine, and I did not look at him.

"The victim has asked to be heard before sentence," said the district attorney. "Mrs. Wentworth."

I stood up.

I had written it down, and I left the page on the bench.

"My name is Georgina," I said. "I'm deaf in my left ear, and I have been since I was nine."

I walked to the lectern and turned so that Lorna was on my right.

"I want you to know what you counted on," I said to her. "You counted on me not knowing where a sound came from. You knew I couldn't tell which side the danger was on. You stood on my lawn and you looked up at my window."

Lorna's face did not move.
