Chapter 22: Ask Me Properly

He did not ask me on the courthouse steps.

He asked me at the Congress Street park, on the Saturday after the sentencing, with June on a blanket under the maple.

I had brought her, and he had brought nothing.

No flowers, no box, no coat over his arm.

He stood in front of the swing he had mended, and he put his hands in his pockets and took them out again.

"I made a list," he said. "Of what to say."

"Where is it?"

"I threw it in the harbour."

"Why?"

"Because every item on it was something I wanted you to say yes to."

I sat on the swing.

It held, and I pushed off lightly with my toes.

"Then say what's left," I said.

He knelt in the wood chips in front of me.

I saw him wince, because his back still pulled when he bent, and I did not help him.

"What do you want, Georgina?"

I stopped swinging.

"You've never asked me that."

"I know. Lorna said it in court. She was right about that one thing, and I hated it."

"You want to know what I want?"

"I want you to tell me, and I want to do it. Even if it's a thing I would never have picked."

My throat closed up.

I had waited four years for that question and I had not known I was waiting.

"I want to hear all of June's first words," I said. "On both sides, if the surgery works. I want to finish three more books. I want a kitchen with a window. I want you to stop opening doors for me before I've reached them."
