Valeria's POV

Lenore brought a lawyer to the hearing.

He was in his sixties, silver-haired, with a leather briefcase.

He sat at her elbow in the same boardroom where I had laid down her check in August.

Behind them, in the chair nearest the door, sat a heavy man in a navy overcoat who did not take it off.

"Her father," Jody had whispered in the hall. "He's the nine million."

I sat on the other side of the long table with Rhys six inches away.

The nurse with the grey braids sat on my other side, in the black dress again.

The board chair opened her folder.

"Dr. Wellington alleges that Dr. Hartigan fabricated a confidential medical history and harassed a colleague in front of the hospital's donors," she said. "Dr. Wellington."

Lenore had a different face today.

It was soft, wounded, and a little shaky.

"I was ambushed," she said. "I was standing at a podium, trying to honor a loss I hadn't spoken of in two years, and a pregnant colleague, who has every reason to resent me, accused me in front of two hundred people of something monstrous. I was frightened and humiliated and I said what I thought would make it stop."

"You said yes," the chair said. "You said there was a baby."

"There was a baby. Mine and Rhys's. I lost it. That's all I confirmed." Her eyes filled. "Everything else, I said to end the scene. I'd have said anything."
