Chapter 18: Bridget

I pressed play.

The first thing I heard was a car door and a gust of wind.

Then came Lenore's voice, low and bored, out of a phone speaker on a hospital bathroom sink.

"Don't be dramatic, Bridget."

"You said you'd write my letter." That was Bridget, thin and breathless. "You said after the post, you'd write it for the program."

"I said I'd think about it. You've embarrassed me twice with that post. Next time someone asks, it's your voice on it, not mine."

"You told me to write it."

"I told you to be useful." A pause, and the click of a lighter. "Listen to me. You're the help. I'm sorry if that's unkind. You carry my envelopes, you pass my messages, and in return I let your mother come to my parties. You don't get to cry about it."

Bridget's breathing on the tape hitched.

"Say what the lawyer wrote. Say Valeria told you. If she gets near the records, I'll know who talked."

"What if she finds the clinic?" Bridget asked.

"She won't," Lenore said.

"But if she..."

"I walked into that building on my own two feet and I walked out of it on my own two feet." Lenore's voice sharpened. "Nobody in that hospital will ever prove a word. I did what I had to, and I'd do it again before I let a girl in scrubs take what's mine."
