Chapter 8: The Hearing

The boardroom on the fifth floor had a table long enough to land a plane on.

At eight o'clock Monday morning, five people sat around it.

The board chair sat at the head, with her silver hair pinned flat and a folder squared in front of her.

On her right sat a stern man from compliance and a woman from human resources who wouldn't look at me.

On her left sat Lenore, in a pale blue suit, with her hands folded.

She had been appointed to the review panel because she was, as the chair put it, "the senior physician most familiar with both parties."

Rhys and I sat across from them, six inches apart.

I had slept three hours on Jody's couch.

I wore my only blazer.

"This is not a trial," the chair began. "This is a fact-finding. Dr. Gallagher has disclosed a personal relationship with a first-year intern. The hospital's policy requires us to determine whether any advantage was given, any pressure applied, or any patient care compromised."

"None," said Rhys.

"We'll hear it from Dr. Hartigan."

I stood up.

I'd practiced this for two days, and every version had been long.

I had decided, around four in the morning, to say less.

"No advantage was given and no pressure was applied," I said. "I have one more thing."

I opened my bag and took out the white envelope.

I laid it on the polished table and slid it six inches toward the chair.

"Dr. Wellington sent this through my stepsister, Bridget Lindquist, on Saturday."

The stern man leaned forward.

The HR woman finally lifted her eyes.
