Chapter 16: What Torin Does

Torin told me in the parking garage on Thursday morning, with the engine off.

"There's a rollover clause," he said.

"Gus put it in the closing papers.

Fifteen percent of Renwick Castings for his own holding company, and a permanent seat on the board."

"The page my father signed without reading."

"One of them.

If it goes through, he owns a piece of your father's foundry and a vote on every one of those three hundred jobs."

"Then kill it."

"The investment committee meets at nine. I can kill it."

He looked straight ahead through the windshield.

"It means telling my partners what the deal is for.

It means the firm hears I've fought a client who sits on three of our funds.

They'll take my seat."

"How much is the seat?"

"My name on the door. My share of every deal for twelve years. The office."

"And you didn't tell me yesterday."

"You'd have told me not to."

"I would."

"And I'd have obeyed you. I wanted to do one thing in this whole mess that I chose myself."

I stared at him.

He turned and met my eyes.

"I'm asking for your permission to walk in there, ma'am. If you say no, I won't."

I thought about the girl at the Carbarn who had asked a stranger for four weeks.

"Yes," I said. "And I'm coming in with you."

"Bron."

"I want to watch."

The boardroom was on the nineteenth floor, a long glass table over the lake.

Seven partners sat around it in good suits.
