Chapter 17: Lantern Night
The door with the lantern was at the back of the Carbarn, past the last of the iron columns.
I had walked past it on every Iron Night for four weeks.
Tonight it stood open an inch, and yellow light fell across the rails in the floor.
Billie waited in front of it with her clipboard and her red armband.
She wore a black suit I had never seen on her.
"Phones are in the lockers," she said. "I have yours."
"You're witnessing?"
"I'm witnessing. And I'm the only monitor who can stand at the Rail. Remember that."
"I won't forget."
Torin stood one pace behind my left heel.
He wore black trousers, a black shirt open at the throat, and the grey collar with the iron ring.
His feet were bare.
He had not said a word since we left his house, and his eyes were on the concrete.
I wore a black jacket cut like a man's and black lipstick and the steel-toed boots from the foundry.
I wore my mother's EMBER tag on a chain, outside my shirt.
I touched the door with two fingers.
It swung inward.
A hooded figure stood just inside with a brass lantern held at shoulder height, silent as a post.
Beyond it ran an iron bar the length of the doorway, a Rail, black and polished from forty years of hands.
