Chapter 20: Taken
They took the bag off my head in the east wing.
The warm room smelled of lavender, with its single bed and its barred window and the iron ring set in the floor.
Gus's driver cut the ties on my wrists with a pocketknife and went out without a word.
My mother stood against the wall, small and still, with her hands folded in front of her.
Gus stood in the doorway.
He had taken off his suit jacket.
There was a smear of dust on the knee of his grey trousers from the van.
"I have guests to see to," he said. "Friends who will want reassuring. It was a rough end to a lovely evening."
"Let us out."
"In the morning, sweetheart, when you're rested."
He looked past me.
"Ember. You'll look after her."
"Yes, sir," my mother said.
He went to the bed and laid something black on the quilt.
The collar, with BRON on the brass tag.
"Wear it when I come back," he said, tenderly, "or I'll put it on you myself."
He left.
The door shut, and a lock turned, and a keypad chirped three times in the hall.
I flew at the door and hit it with my shoulder.
It was solid steel under the white paint.
