Chapter 20: The Second One
I believed her.
Mrs. Zito picked up her spoon again and pointed it at my bowl.
"Now eat. You can't fight a Sabatino on smelts."
Four nights later, at eleven, somebody knocked on the shop glass.
Not a fist.
Three knocks, soft, like he didn't think he had the right.
I came down in sweatpants and a cardigan with a pencil in my hair.
Mauro was standing on the sidewalk under the streetlight.
He was in the suit they'd arrested him in.
The jacket was creased, and his hair was in his eyes.
I unlocked the door.
"They let you out."
"At four." His breath smoked in the cold. "Me and the five. My lawyer drove me as far as Broad Street. I walked the rest."
"You walked."
"I didn't want anybody to drive me here."
I stepped back and let him in.
He stood in the middle of my shop and looked at the packing boxes.
The dress forms in a row under sheets.
"What is all this?"
"Day thirteen of thirty."
He looked at me.
"Their witness swore she copied that box in my office the week of Thanksgiving," he said. "Your page has a ship on it that docked the Thursday after."
