Chapter 20: June Fourteenth
"June," I said. "Last June."
"What day in June?"
"I don't know, baby. The middle. It was a Sunday. They're all Sundays."
Macey already had her phone out.
She typed with both thumbs, fast.
She turned the phone around and held it up to my face.
It was the invitational's own page.
NATIONAL BRISKET INVITATIONAL. KANSAS CITY. FINAL ROUND: SUNDAY, JUNE 14. TURN-IN 2:00 P.M. CENTRAL.
I read it twice.
Then the ground under the pecan trees tilted.
"June fourteenth," Macey said. "Two o'clock. Mom. That's the paper."
Deke was beside me before I'd said a word.
He read the screen over my shoulder.
He didn't say anything.
He just put his hand on the small of my back and held it there.
"The separation paper," Macey said, louder. "It says Cypress Flat, June fourteenth, two o'clock. You were in Kansas City. You were at the pit. You turned in the box."
"I was at the pit at three in the morning," I said slowly. "I didn't leave it till the trophy."
"And Grandma Doreen was there," Macey said. "Wasn't she? She's always there. With the visor."
