Chapter 8: Fifty Thousand
I didn't run.
I thought about it, for about as long as it takes to set a cup down.
Then I set my cup down and stayed where I was, at the end of the counter, in my chambray shirt and my socks.
Doreen couldn't serve me herself.
She was a party.
Deke had explained that on the porch, the first night, while I pretended not to be scared.
Whatever she'd driven two and a half hours to do, it wasn't that.
The bell over the door jingled.
Doreen came in.
She had on a lilac pantsuit, pearl earrings and the white visor, even indoors.
She had a leather folder under her arm.
She looked at the worn dance floor.
She looked at the counter and the six stools and the eight regulars on them, eating eggs.
She looked at me last.
"Raylene," she said. "Well. Look at you."
"Doreen."
"Aren't you going to offer me coffee? I've been in the car since five."
"Vernie sells coffee," I said. "It's a dollar."
Vernie, at the urn, didn't turn around.
"Dollar fifty for Kilgores," she said.
The fiddler laughed into his eggs.
Doreen smiled.
She sat down on the empty stool next to the tube-rental man, who moved his plate an inch away from her.
She opened her folder on the counter.
"I'm going to be quick, because I know you've got briskets to watch." She slid one page toward me. "This says you waive anything in that old prenup. Paragraph nine, and anything else your little lawyer friend thinks he found."
"I don't have a lawyer."
"You have a process server." Her eyes went to the porch, where Deke's truck was parked. "One who quits halfway. We'll get to him."
She took a cashier's check out of the folder and set it face up on top of the page.
