Chapter 23: Eight Pounds Six Ounces
"Where is he?" I said.
"Vittorio? At the hospital. In the hallway, in his suit from yesterday." She paused. "Davide is with him. Davide brought flowers. Blue ones."
"Of course he did."
"I'm going to go and be a grandmother now," she said. "I'm going to smile at everybody. Pray for my face."
She hung up.
Leandro had rolled onto his back. He was looking at the ceiling with one arm over his eyes.
"Thanksgiving," he said.
"Thanksgiving."
"February."
"February," I said.
He started to laugh, low and tired, and pulled me back down against his chest.
Downstairs, somebody turned the Christmas music up.
We drove to his grandmother's at two with six pies from the bakery on the back seat.
Nonna's narrow house was full to the doors.
Papa was in the kitchen in an apron that said KISS THE COOK, arguing with Nonna about the turkey.
"You don't put macaroni before a turkey," Papa said. "It's America. The turkey is the macaroni."
"In this house there is always macaroni," Nonna said. "Sit down. You're in my way and your gravy is sweet."
