Chapter 26: The Font
I didn't step back from the window.
"Hello, Davide."
"Noemi." He pulled his collar up against the cold. "You look well. Glowing. Isn't that what they say?"
"That's what they say."
"Thirty weeks, I'd guess. Maybe thirty-one." He tilted his head. "I asked a doctor I know."
"You know a lot of doctors."
"I know a lot of everything." He smiled. "I came to invite you personally. Sunday. Sit near the front. The family should see there are no hard feelings."
"I don't have an invitation."
"You don't need one. You're a Corsetti." He tapped the sill twice with the gold ring. "For now."
Behind me, I heard the stairs creak. Leandro, stopping halfway down.
Davide heard it too.
His eyes went past my shoulder into the dark pharmacy and came back to me, still pleasant.
"Give my regards to Bensonhurst," he said.
He walked away down Court Street with his hands in his coat pockets, whistling.
My hands didn't shake until he turned the corner.
Sunday, December fourteenth, came up cold and white.
It had snowed in the night. Just an inch, enough to make Court Street look clean.
