Chapter 16: Proof on the Feed
Thora walked to the lip of the ravine and looked straight into the white drone's lens.
"That's not my confession," she said.
The chat window on the drone's belly scrolled so fast it blurred.
SHE SAID IT. WE HEARD IT. SO SHE DID POISON THEM. WHY IS SHE SMILING.
"I'm not smiling," Thora said. "I'm angry. It's different."
She turned her head.
"Dax. Bring the kit."
Dax picked up his pack and came to stand at her shoulder.
Ansel came to the other side.
The Heir stood behind her, quiet and enormous.
Keir pulled his wrists out of the loosened belt, rubbed them and walked up last, without his rifle and without his grin.
Five people stood in a row against the black wall, and every drone in the sky swung toward them.
"I was recorded for a week," Thora said. "Anyone can cut a sentence out of a week. Dax, show them the seams."
"I'm a medic, not a sound engineer," Dax said.
"You're a man with a field scanner. Run the voice file."
He hesitated, then took a flat gray slate from his pack and held it up to the drone's speaker.
The slate chimed and printed a line of bars.
"There," he said, pointing. "Every one of those breaks is a cut. Eleven in a five-second sentence. Someone took her words and stuck them together. The word 'tart' was pulled from a different day than the rest."
The chat stopped for the space of a breath.
Then it exploded.
FAKE. IT'S FAKE. WHO RECORDED HER FOR A WEEK. THE DRONE IS STELLA'S.
"That drone belongs to Stella Ostrow," Thora said. "Its call sign is on the screen. Ask who flew it here."
