Chapter 16: Rory's Turn
Rory knocked on the alley door of the bakery at ten that night.
I knew it was him because he knocked the first four notes of the Herons fight song and then stopped.
I opened the door a few inches.
He stood in the light from the lamp over the dumpster, with no cap on, holding a paper bag.
His hair was flat, and his shirt was wrinkled, and there was nothing on his jersey where the C should have been.
"Soup," he said, and held up the bag. "From Dane. He made it at five and then stood in the kitchen for an hour deciding whether to bring it himself."
"Why didn't he?"
"He said you'd rather see me."
I let him in.
He sat on a flour sack between the cot and the dough sheeter, and I sat on the cot, and for a minute neither of us said anything.
That was a first.
"Coach took the patch off at noon," Rory said. He pulled a small black-and-orange square out of his pocket and set it on the sack beside him. "I told the whole team Sunday night that I knew about Lance and Lacey in July and said nothing. And I knew about the tailgate, and I failed to stop it. I told them none of it was yours."
"You didn't have to do that."
"Yes, I did."
He picked at the thread on the patch.
"I'll tell you the whole July thing now," he said, "and I won't make a joke in it. If I try, you can throw the soup."
"Fine."
"I was getting gas two towns over. Lance was at the next pump, and Lacey was in the passenger seat of his truck."
