Chapter 20: Wedding Day
"I know about the wire," Pavel said again, gently, like a man reading a bedtime story. "I saw it glow in Torben's study."
My hand tightened on the phone.
"You didn't tell him."
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I wanted to see what you'd do with it."
Bram's eyes were on my face, and I turned a little away from him.
"I raised you, Vesper. I know your hands better than you do."
"You're threatening me."
"I'm advising you. Play that tape, and your voice is on it too. He said so himself. 'One shot. Pavel said you were his best.'"
"I know what he said."
"Then you know you'll hang beside me."
"Maybe."
He laughed, low and affectionate.
"That's my kid," he said. "Saturday, then."
The line went dead.
On Saturday the sky over Lake Forest was a hard, clean blue, and two hundred guests sat on white chairs facing a rose arch.
Torben's lawn ran down to the same bluff, and the lake behind it was bright as tin.
