Chapter 6: Discharged

"Tilly," I said.

She lowered the phone and smiled at me over it.

Then she turned and ran down through the cedars, her white coat flashing between the trunks.

Wylie lunged for the steps and his legs went out from under him.

I caught him around the chest before his head hit the stone.

"Let her go," I said.

"She's got you on camera."

"She's got me kissing a grown man in my own pool. Let her show it to the moon."

By breakfast the next morning, she'd shown it to everybody.

Arlene came back from the packhouse kitchen with a pot of borrowed coffee and a face.

"It's on every phone in this pack. Somebody played it for me with the sound up."

"How's the sound?" Wylie asked.

Arlene smacked the back of his head.

Then she looked at me.

"Your mother's called the elders' fire for tonight. She's going to say you broke healer law."

Healer law is old and simple.

A healer doesn't take what a patient can't give.

Gran had said it to me a hundred times, with her hands on my shoulders.

I'd never broken it.

But I'd kissed him in the water while he was still mine to treat, and that was enough for Mom.

The elders' fire burns in a ring of flat stones on the lakeshore below the packhouse.

By sundown the whole pack was standing around it.

The Ridgeback party had come down to watch.

Dillon stood behind his mother with his hands in his pockets.

Dad sat on the Alpha's stone with Mom standing at his shoulder in a gray shawl.

Tilly sat at Mom's feet, with the little bandage still on her scalp.

Mom spoke first, in her gentle voice.

"I take no joy in this. But a healer who uses a helpless patient for her own pleasure forfeits him. That's the law. I ask that the Hollow Pine guest be moved back into the packhouse tonight, into the care of Stonemere's healer."
