Chapter 5: Day One

Leon stood in my doorway in his shirtsleeves with his tie in his hand.

He'd come straight from dinner.

He smelled like cold air and whiskey and the leather of his car.

"The driver's still on the road," I said. "If this is for him, he can't see the second floor."

"It isn't for him."

"Then what is it for?"

He looked at my mouth.

He didn't answer.

"Say it," I said.

"I haven't stopped thinking about the courthouse," he said. "I sat through a dinner with six men and I didn't hear a word."

Heat crept up my throat.

"That's in the contract too," I said. "Separate bedrooms."

"I know what's in the contract."

"Then why are you standing in my door?"

"Because I wrote it before I met you."

I took hold of his shirt and pulled him through.

He shut the door with his heel, and I had my back against it and his mouth on mine before the latch finished clicking.

There was nothing polite in it.

He kissed me and finally let go.

His hand slid up my side under the T-shirt I slept in.

It was big and hot against my ribs, and I made a sound into his mouth I hadn't planned on.

"Off," he said against my lip.

"You first."

"No."

He caught the hem of the shirt and dragged it over my head.

I had nothing on under it but a pair of cotton underwear.

I'm a size ten, with a soft stomach and wide hips.

My breasts have always been too much for a bra.

For one second, in the lamplight, I felt every inch of it.

Leon didn't look away.

He looked slowly, all the way down, and when he looked up again his eyes were nearly black.

"God," he said, rough and low. "Look at you."

"Leon."

"I wrote a separate-bedrooms clause," he said, "and I'm an idiot."

He picked me up.

He lifted me off the floor with both hands under my thighs.

My legs went around his waist.

He carried me to the white bed.

He laid me down and stood over me.
