Chapter 23: Day Ninety
On day ninety it snowed on the farm for the first time that year.
I drove out alone in the green truck.
Dal had gone ahead at dawn to fix a fence and be where I could find him.
The fields were white and the sky was the color of a nickel.
Birdie was waiting on the porch step in her yellow raincoat with Mrs. Dunbar in her arms and a snowflake on each eyelash.
"You're late," she said.
"I'm four minutes early."
"I've been waiting since breakfast."
"Where's your dad?"
"In the barn, being calm."
I found him inside, standing in a square of gray light with a pitchfork he wasn't using.
He turned when the door creaked.
He held his folded page in one hand and mine in the other, both on the gold-crested hotel stationery.
He'd kept both for ninety days, in the glove compartment of the truck.
"It's today," he said.
"It's today."
"You said you'd tell me to my face."
"Yes."
"I'm listening."
I took the two papers out of his fingers.
They'd gone soft at the folds.
His handwriting was blocky and mine slanted, two signatures side by side at the bottom, ninety days old.
