Chapter 24: Cake
The cake stood straight.
It stood on the farmhouse kitchen table at seven on Saturday morning, three layers, white, with not a lean in it.
On top, in yellow icing, sat Mrs. Dunbar, with two eyes this time.
Dal stood beside it in his undershirt with flour in his eyebrow and three days of stubble.
"I did it at four," he said. "I used a level."
"You used a level on a cake."
"I'm an arborist. I know what plumb is."
Birdie climbed onto a chair, put her nose an inch from the icing, and studied it.
"The hen has both eyes," she said. "Good."
"Is it straight?"
"It's very straight. It's a little boring."
Dal's mother laughed so hard she had to sit down.
It was the twentieth of December, a clear cold day with the snow packed hard on the fields.
The crew had set up the big barn the night before with propane heaters and rows of folding chairs.
The six men in orange vests stood at the door in clean jackets, trying to be ushers.
The old chairman came on his cane with a hothouse rose.
