Chapter 14: What Her Father Did

I found her by lunchtime, because the landlord's cousin drove a bread truck and noticed a green Corolla with a dragging muffler.

He texted the cemetery name to the flip phone my parole officer had issued me.

It was a flat field on the east side with small stones and fresh plastic flowers.

Amos Carmody lay in the third row from the fence, under a marker so new that the grass around it had not grown back.

Katie sat cross-legged in front of it with the tote beside her.

I stopped twenty feet away on the wet grass.

"I can hear you breathing," she said without turning.

"I'll go if you say so."

"You don't know how to leave when you're told to. You've never once done it."

"That's true."

"Then sit down, and stay quiet."

I sat a few feet behind her.

The wind pulled at the plastic flowers, and somewhere a mower droned.

She had the ledger open on her knees again.

This time she was holding the back cover, and I saw a seam in the old cloth where something had been slit and glued shut.
