Chapter 17: The Trust
The trustee's office was above a dry cleaner on Broad Street, and it smelled of starch and old paper.
His name was on the glass, but I will leave it there.
He was seventy-nine, with a cane and a hearing aid, and he had been my father's friend for fifty years.
He shook my hand with both of his.
"You look like him around the eyes," he said. "I told them you would."
Katie stood beside me with the grocery tote on her shoulder.
She had put a scarf over the bruise on her cheek, and she had not yet said how she felt about being here.
She had said only, at breakfast, "I'm coming. It's my father's name too."
The trustee spread three documents on the desk.
"Your father set up this trust the winter before he died," he said.
"It holds fifty-one percent of Westerfield Freight, in your name, and it passes to you outright on your thirtieth birthday."
"That was a year ago."
"Fourteen months. I mailed notice to the Westerfield estate, and then to every address I could find."
