Chapter 23: The Meeting

The boardroom was on the fourteenth floor of the Westerfield terminal, and it smelled of lemon polish.

Nine directors sat around a long walnut table.

Eugenia presided from the head in a dove-gray suit, with Dalton at her elbow and four lawyers behind her.

Along the glass wall stood a row of folding chairs, filled with drivers in clean shirts, the small shareholders from the employee plan.

The reporter sat at the end of the row, with his notebook on his knee.

I walked in at nine, carrying a canvas bag that smelled of bread.

The room went quiet.

"Mr. Westerfield," Eugenia said, as pleasantly as a bank clerk. "You're early for a man whose wife has a hearing."

"I'll stay for both."

"You may take the chair at the foot of the table. The majority shareholder, I believe."

"Yes."

"Then let us begin."

The vote on the sale came first.

A lawyer read the terms in a flat voice.

Dallas would pay a good price for the fleet, the terminals and the name, and nine hundred drivers would be offered interviews.

"All in favor," Eugenia said.
