Chapter 24: The Cell
"Eugenia Westerfield," said the older detective. "You are under arrest for forgery of a will, conspiracy to commit fraud and obstruction of justice."
She did not move.
"Dalton Westerfield. You are under arrest for arson, for conspiracy, and for causing the death of Amos Carmody by withholding his medication."
Dalton laughed.
It was a high, thin sound, and it ended in the middle.
"This is ridiculous. I'm the chief executive. You can't..."
"Sit down, sir," said the officer, "or we'll sit you."
He did not sit.
The cuffs closed on his wrists with a click that I had heard once at a courthouse eighteen months and a lifetime ago.
He turned his head and looked at me.
His eyes were wet, and for the first time since I was fourteen they had nothing arranged behind them.
"Reed," he said. "Tell them it was her idea."
"I'm not your lawyer."
"Reed, please."
"You had a man bring a sedative into a visiting room for a woman who came to see her father," I said.
"You ordered an old man's pills held back until his heart stopped."
He opened his mouth.
"There isn't anything I can tell them," I said.
They took Eugenia next.
She held out her wrists herself, and she did not look at the cuffs.
She lifted her chin and looked at the oldest director, and then at the drivers along the glass wall, and then at me.
"I raised you," she said.
"No."
My voice was quiet.
"You put up with me until I was nineteen, and you called it raising."
For a second her face did nothing.
