Chapter 5: Waiting Room
On Monday I went to work.
I had slept eleven hours in a stranger's guest room and woken up married.
I put on scrubs with cartoon paws on them, tied my hair back, and drove my own car to Grand Avenue.
Emmett had left a note on the kitchen table beside a lawyer's business card.
"Her name is on the front. She's expecting your call. Eggs in the fridge. E."
He had also left a key, a spare to the building, on a ring with a tiny brass beer tap.
I put it in my pocket and said nothing to anyone.
The clinic was a bright, noisy place that smelled like disinfectant and wet fur.
My coworker at the front desk looked at me over her glasses and then at my left hand.
"Seriously?" she said.
"I'll explain at lunch."
"I'm going to need a full hour."
"Maybe two."
By nine-thirty I had weighed three beagles, held a cat that wanted to kill me, and run bloodwork on an old retriever who sighed through the whole thing.
I was happy for the first time since Friday.
It was simple work.
A dog does not text you "I can't."
At 10:15 the front door chimed, and the waiting room went quiet in the particular way a room does when someone enters wrong.
I looked through the pane in the treatment room door.
Cody stood in the middle of the lobby with a huge bouquet of pink roses.
He was wearing the gray quarter-zip and had a fresh haircut.
He had the face he used on clients, wide and warm, with all the veneers showing.
I knew that smile.
I had loved that smile for six years.
I took off my gloves and walked out.
"Jeanie," he said, loudly, to the whole room. "There she is."
