Chapter 28: Nine O'Clock

At eight thirty the next morning the kitchen was crowded.

Paola at the stove, making eggs nobody would eat.

Valerio at the head of the long table with my laptop in front of him, because I'd refused to touch it.

The old judge from across my landing, in his cardigan, with his cane hooked on the back of a chair.

Valerio had sent a car for him at seven.

The cook. The housekeeper. The bodyguard, who had brought doughnuts and was eating all of them.

Two of the aunts, who had heard from somebody who'd heard from Paola.

Fiorella, in her black dress, standing by the back door with a white bakery box, as if she might leave at any minute.

And Tito, under the table, with something rolled up in his arms that nobody was allowed to see.

"It's not ready," he kept saying. "Don't look at it."

"I'm not looking, partner."

"You're looking with your ears."

At eight fifty I went and stood in the pantry.

"Josephine," Valerio called.
