Chapter 8: Nobody Dies

The man on the screen got back in his car and drove away.

Valerio set the phone down on the table, face down, very gently.

That was worse than if he'd thrown it.

He stood up.

He went to the hall closet and took out his jacket, and put it on, and checked the inside pocket.

"Get me four of the guys," he said to Paola. "Tell them the lake house in Scituate."

I didn't know what that meant. I didn't want to.

Paola didn't move.

"Val."

"Call them."

I got to the front door before he did.

I stood with my back against it.

He stopped two feet from me.

I had never seen his face like this.

It wasn't loud. It was flat, like a lake in winter, with something moving under the ice.

"Move, Josephine."

"No."

"He sold my son's whereabouts to the woman suing me for him."

"He sold a fake address," I said. "Tito is asleep on your kitchen bench with syrup in his hair. He's fine."

"That's not the point."

"It's exactly the point. Listen to me for two minutes. You're paying me two million dollars. Get your money's worth."

His jaw worked.

He didn't move me. He could have, with one hand.

He stood there and waited.

"If Whitman disappears this week," I said, "what happens in June?"

He didn't answer.

"Fiorella's lawyer stands up in front of the judge. She says, Your Honor, the Ruggeri family's own attorney vanished three weeks before this hearing. She doesn't have to prove anything. She just has to say it."
