Chapter 30: The West Wind
"He's inside," I said. "Eating my offerings."
The woman laughed, a big gusty laugh that blew my hair across my face.
"Of course he is."
Theron came out through the bronze doors with a heel of temple bread in his hand.
He saw her and stopped dead.
The bread fell on the step.
"You," he said.
"Me," said the west wind, and ran at him.
She hit him so hard he took a step back, and she hung off his neck with her bare feet off the stone.
He put one arm round her, awkward as a man holding a bird.
Over her shoulder he looked at me, and for once in his life the God of War didn't know what to do with his face.
The fisherman had got up off the step.
He came over and looked up at Theron, a long way up, with his knife on his belt and his jaw set.
"You're the one who carried her to the gate," he said.
"I am."
"She says you never once tried to talk her out of it."
"She was crying too hard to argue with."
The fisherman considered that.
Then he held out a hand, hard as rope, with a fish scale still stuck to the thumb.
