Chapter 11: The Driver

"I know what they paid him," I said, just as quietly. "Six hundred thousand. What I want to know is what it bought."

Sadie sat back fast.

For one second she looked at me with something close to respect.

Then she grabbed her jacket off the chair and walked out of the library without her laptop.

The girl beside her closed it for her, very gently, and pushed it to the middle of the table.

Nobody at that table was going to carry it out for her.

I drove home and told Bram every word.

He made me say the last line twice.

"She knows," he said. "She doesn't know what she knows. But she's seen something."

"Ellis brags in bed," I said. "He used to tell me about verdicts like they were touchdowns."

Bram looked at me for a beat too long.

"Sorry," I said.

"Don't be." He pulled the laptop over. "Let's find out what he bragged about."

The wrongful-death case was public.

Anybody can look it up on the state court website, if they know the case number and are willing to read for three hours.

I wasn't.

Bram was.

He sat at the shop counter after closing, reading glasses on, a legal pad at his elbow, while I put Tilly to bed and came back down.

He'd filled four pages in his blocky capitals.

"Here," he said, and turned the laptop toward me.

It was a notice for a deposition.

The freight company's dispatcher, the woman who ran the driver's schedule the night of the crash.

Scheduled for the second week of October, two years ago.

Cancelled on the ninth.

"The case settled the next week," Bram said. "Six hundred thousand dollars came in the same month. And the one witness who knew the driver's hours never said a word under oath."
