Chapter 4: Night Two

At dawn a bell rang, and the six of us were herded into the chapel for breakfast.

A long black table stood where the pews had been.

It was set with black bread and a pot of tea that tasted of smoke.

Alyssa sat at the head of it and poured for everyone.

"Eat," she said. "We need our strength, and nobody is leaving this room until we've talked."

I sat at the far end, next to Loretta, with my notebook under my arm.

Nobody else touched the bread.

A nurse sat across from me with a hospital badge still pinned to her bodice.

She had not slept either.

"How did you do it?" she whispered.

"Do what?"

"Make the ceiling go crazy. Make him sit."

I looked down the table at Alyssa, who was pouring tea and pretending not to listen.

"My vow has no end," I said, low. "Loretta's is tied to mine."

"If your vow is tied to my story, the third dawn can't take it."

The nurse put her cup down. "You're sure."

"He told us himself."

"Then I'm in," she said. "Whatever I have to say."

A quiet girl in a gray gown nodded without a word. She had stopped looking at Alyssa.

The girl in green stared at her plate.

"Alyssa says that's a trick," she said finally. "She says it's a trap, and she's a lawyer."

"Alyssa says a lot of things," Loretta said, through her bread.

"I'm staying with Alyssa," the girl in green said.

Alyssa looked up and smiled at me over the teapot.
