Chapter 22: The Investigator's Badge
The investigator walked up the aisle with her badge held out in front of her.
Four hundred people made a lane for her without being asked.
"Joyce Garver," she said. "I'm with the state attorney general's office. I've heard you say, in front of witnesses and a recording, that you watched Mrs. Garver in labor and left her inside a locked house."
Joyce's mouth opened.
"I heard it live," the investigator said. "That's enough for me. I'm taking you into custody for evidence tampering, conspiracy to commit custodial interference, and unlawful restraint."
"You have no jurisdiction."
"I have a warrant draft and a judge who'll sign it on the second. Tonight I have probable cause and two state troopers in the lobby."
Two troopers came through the double doors.
They were tall and calm, with their hats under their arms.
Joyce stood very straight on the stage, with her pearls and her champagne gown and the microphone still in her hand.
"Do you know who I am?" she said.
"Yes, ma'am," the investigator said. "That's what makes it interesting."
A sound went through the room.
It was low and ragged, and it took me a moment to understand that people were laughing, a few of them, in shock.
Joyce heard it.
She looked at her guests, her tenants and her friends of forty years.
For the first time I saw her face with nothing smooth left on it.
She looked old.
"Neil," she said.
Her son stood where he was.
"Neil, call my lawyer. Tell him to bring the paper. Tell him to say it was all a misunderstanding."
"No, Mom."
"You will do as you are told."
"Not tonight," Neil said.
