Chapter 14: The Siege
"There's an old canal under the north wall," Emmett said.
"How do you know?"
"I read the dungeon guide for this map. Third floor, east stairs, sewer exit."
"Of course you did."
"Some of us like maps."
We threw on armor in the dark, Sunblade gold over linen and Nightwarden black over wool, buckling by feel.
Tavi was waiting at the top of the east stairs.
I stared.
"What are you doing here?"
"I followed the soldiers," she said, out of breath, her braids coming loose. "They're going to burn the library. The Champion says it's a place of heresy. They've got oil carts."
"Tavi, you shouldn't be here."
"Neither should you, and you're here."
She had a point.
Outside, the front doors boomed.
Something heavy hit the bronze, and the hinges screamed.
"They're ramming," Emmett said. "We have maybe two minutes."
"Down," I said.
We ran.
Down the stairs, along a dripping corridor, past rows of charred shelves, into a stone cistern half-filled with black water.
At the far end, an iron grate stood open.
A tunnel led away into the dark.
