Chapter 17: The Cells
They put me in the highest cell of the Regent's tower, and Emmett in the deepest.
The cell was a stone box with a straw pallet and a slit window.
My armor was gone, and my sword, and the only thing I had left was a grey wool shift and the mark on my wrist.
I tried the door.
I tried the walls.
I tried the old trick, kicking the bars until a guard told me to stop.
Then I sat on the pallet and took a long breath.
I could feel Emmett in my chest like a second pulse.
He was far away, forty paces down and across, and each beat of his heart came with a faint tug of pain.
It was the leash.
It was stretched past its limit, but the seals had grown, and the pain came dull.
Tavi had slipped away in the crush at the court, down a servant stair, as small and quick as a mouse.
I'd felt her go through the link, a flash of Emmett's relief.
She was out there somewhere.
She was the only one of us who was free.
