Chapter 7: Echo

"Say that again," I said.

"I didn't say anything."

"You thought it."

His face closed.

I felt it close, too, a cold click in the back of my skull, and the inner voice went silent.

"Don't," I said. "Don't shut it."

"I didn't."

"You did. I felt it."

"Then you felt wrong."

He stepped back from me.

The distance between us was exactly two feet, and it felt like a gap in the road.

"Not her," I said. "Not like this. What does that mean?"

"It was a stray thought. The link is new. It picks up noise."

"You think very specific noise."

"I think a lot of things at two in the morning."

"Emmett."

"Greer."

We stood in the moonlit yard, with the whole town watching from windows, and neither of us blinked.

"I'm going to find Tavi," he said.

"Walk twenty paces and see how that goes."

He took one step.

The leash stung both of us, and he swore, and I swore, and we stopped.

"Fine," I said. "Then we're going to talk where nobody can hear us. The barn."

"The barn."

"Now."

The barn behind the stable smelled of hay and horse.

I pulled the door shut and leaned on it, and he stood in the middle of the floor looking at the rafters.

"You know something," I said.

"I know several things."

"Something about this."

"I know that I kissed you against a stable wall in front of a town."

"I kissed you."

"We both did it."

"It was my idea."

"You always say that."

I stepped closer, and he stepped back, and his shoulders touched a post.
