Chapter 7: Orders

The king did not raise his voice.

"Major Valerius, you will surrender your sword to the Lord Commander."

The hall stirred.

"My lord," Valerius said. "On the word of a girl with no name?"

"On the word of a recruit who stood where no one stands and said what no one says." The king's face was kind. "I will have an inquiry. You will remain in your quarters under guard until it is finished."

Valerius unbuckled his sword and held it out.

Theron took it without a word.

Linnea heard the major's mind go quiet and dangerous.

Not now. Not in front of them. There will be a better hour.

The two captains were led out behind him.

The court began to murmur and move.

"Linnea," said the king. "A moment."

She stepped forward.

"You will tell the Lord Commander everything you can about these twelve women, and he will find them. I want their names, and I want them to speak to me themselves."

"Yes, my lord."

"Lord Commander." The king's gaze shifted. "She will ride with you. You will keep her close until this is done."

For the first time, something moved in Theron's face.

"My lord, I would prefer to send a captain."

"I know."

"A recruit does not ride with the commander of the Watch."

"A recruit does not usually stand in my hall and accuse a major," said the king. "You will keep her close, Theron."
