Chapter 15: Coveralls
Saturday the seventh came up blue and windless, a perfect day for photographs.
I put on my old orange coveralls for the first time since December.
"Nobody looks at a groomer," I said in the mirror.
"I'm looking at a groomer," Tobin said from the door.
He was wearing the patroller's Dark Moon jacket, with the hood up over his shaggy hair.
"If anything happens," he said, "you take the page and go. You don't come back for me."
"Tobin."
"I mean it. That page is the Moot. I'm just a forecaster."
I looked at him for a long time.
"I'll go," I said.
I didn't know yet if it was true.
The snowmaker led us over the pass on the two snowmobiles, then down the back road through the trees.
The bond woke up as we dropped toward the lodge.
It pointed straight up, at the summit of the Crown.
Roman was up there, bright and pleased with himself.
We left the sleds in the trees behind the maintenance yard.
The cook was waiting at the kitchen door in her apron.
She was a broad gray-haired woman with flour to her elbows, and she pulled me into a hug that cracked my back.
