Chapter 23: The Tamarack Table
Ginny wouldn't tell us anything.
She drove us up to the ski hill in her truck with both of us squeezed on the bench seat, the way the plow driver had brought us into town in December.
"Close your eyes," she said at the bottom of the access road.
"I'm not closing my eyes in your truck, Ginny. You drive like a moose."
"Close them, or I tell the whole bar what I heard through the floor last night."
I closed them.
Tobin was laughing so hard the seat shook.
The truck stopped.
Ginny's door slammed, then mine opened, and she pulled me out by the sleeve into the cold morning.
"Okay," she said. "Look."
The black frame of the burned barn was gone.
In its place stood a new one.
Real timber, fresh and yellow, with a steep green tin roof and two big doors wide enough for a cat.
The whole parking lot was full of people.
The four from the wedding run.
The two from February.
The mechanic and the woman from the patrol.
The mill foreman and half his crew, the hardware store owner, the owner of the hill in her man's work jacket.
